FRONTLINE Honored with 2 National Press Club Awards

The National Press Club announced today that two FRONTLINE documentaries, A Thousand Cuts and Massacre in El Salvador, have been honored with 2022 National Press Club Journalism Awards. 

FRONTLINE’s January 2021 documentary A Thousand Cuts was honored with the NPC’s Arthur E. Rowse Award for Excellence in Examining The News Media (Broadcast). According to the NPC’s website, this award recognizes print, online and broadcast excellence in examining the vital role and responsibility of the news media in a democracy.

From filmmaker Ramona S. Diaz, the award-winning feature-length documentary follows renowned journalist Maria Ressa, CEO of the independent news site Rappler and a top target of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on press freedom. In December 2021, Ressa went on to be named a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

A Thousand Cuts premiered on PBS following a decorated theatrical release in the summer of 2020 by PBS Distribution. Most recently, the film won a Peabody Award in the Documentary category and a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award in the International TV category.  

Massacre in El Salvador, FRONTLINE’s November 2021 documentary in partnership with Retro Report and ProPublica won the NPC’s Edwin M. Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence, for excellence in foreign affairs reporting. According to the NPC’s website, the award was named after Edwin M. Hood, a distinguished diplomatic correspondent for the Associated Press and a founding member of the National Press Club.

The collaborative investigation Massacre in El Salvador followed the ongoing fight for justice after the horrific 1981 attack on the village of El Mozote and surrounding areas, and how today the case against high-ranking military officials is faltering under Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele.
